Ne Ja / Not I

NE JA / NOT I is a hybrid video installation and performance developed in dialogue with Samuel Beckett’s Not I, rearticulated through the conditions of contemporary digital mediation. Combining moving image, live performance, and sound, the work explores experiences of estrangement and the ways social expectations, inherited roles, and mechanisms of visibility shape female subjectivity.

Through a prepared piano, live sound processing, and a quadraphonic sound environment, the work articulates a fragmented sonic field in which the collision of ritual and contemporary sound reflects a dislocated subject..

Presented at the Fortepiano Festival of Contemporary Music, KIC Budo Tomović, Podgorica, Montenegro.

About

Marija Mitrović (MARIEK) is a Montenegrin sound artist, pianist, and composer working across contemporary music, performance, and audiovisual installation. Rooted in contemporary piano and experimental composition, her practice moves between structured and improvised forms, combining acoustic instruments, voice, live processing, spatial sound, and visual media. Through these elements she develops hybrid works in which sound, space, and technology continuously reshape the conditions of perception.

At the core of her work is listening as a way of relating - to oneself, to others, and to the environment. Rather than treating sound as a fixed object, she approaches it as a shifting field of attention, resonance, and presence, often creating situations where perception becomes unstable, shared, and in flux.

Her projects include installations, transmedia performances, and collaborative compositions that engage both performers and audiences within immersive and technologically mediated environments. In these contexts, she explores how meaning emerges through embodied listening, proximity, and interaction within shared sonic space.
